THRUWAY AUTHORITY ANNOUNCES COMPLETION OF INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENT PROJECT IN ERIE COUNTY
Thruway Overpass Removed to Create Improved Traffic Flow at New Intersection of Exit 57 and NY Route 75 in Hamburg
Project Completed Below Budget

The New York State Thruway Authority today announced the completion of a project to remove a Thruway bridge and create a new, more streamlined intersection at exit 57 (Hamburg) on the Thruway (I-90) in Erie County. The project finished below budget.

“We’re already receiving positive feedback from motorists about the improved traffic flow at exit 57 and enhanced safety in the area,” Thruway Authority Executive Director Matthew J. Driscoll said. “This reconstruction is benefiting motorists and the local community and making access to the Thruway and Camp Road more efficient.”

The $4.5 million renovation project began in May 2018 and included the removal of the Thruway bridge over Camp Road (NY Route 75) and the creation of a road-level T-intersection with a traffic light. The new design streamlines the way motorists enter and exit the Thruway (I-90) at exit 57 (Hamburg).  More than 13,000 motorists use exit 57 every day.

Additional work included the reconstruction of the roadway leading to the toll plaza, upgraded safety features such as new pavement markings and signage, guide rail upgrades, as well as improved safety for pedestrians including wider lanes, shoulders and sidewalks.

Union Concrete & Construction Corporation of West Seneca, NY completed the project, which was overseen by the Thruway Authority as lead agency, and conducted in collaboration with the New York State Department of Transportation.

“This new intersection will streamline traffic flow while also making it easier and safer for motorists to enter and exit the highway,” Department of Transportation Acting Commissioner Paul A. Karas said. “Governor Cuomo’s continued investments in sound transportation infrastructure maintain quality of life and keep the economy moving forward.”
