The New York State Thruway Authority today announced overnight lane closures on the South Grand Island Bridges over several weekends starting Friday, September 6 and Saturday, September 7. The closures will allow both spans to be inspected as required by the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) every two years. Routine maintenance on the bridges will also be performed.

Southbound Lane Closures:

  • Left lane
    • Friday, 9/6 9 p.m. through 9 a.m. Saturday, 9/7
    • Saturday, 9/7 9 p.m. through 8 a.m. Sunday 9/8

Additional lane closures on both bridges are scheduled for the next three weekends. More information will be provided ahead of each closure.

Motorists are urged to be alert and follow the posted work zone speed limits. Fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone.

To further enhance safety for workers in a work zone, Governor Hochul signed legislation establishing the Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement pilot program. The safety enforcement program began in April 2023 and is in effect in various active construction zones on the Thruway. Work zones with speed camera enforcement will have clear signage leading up to it and motorists violating the posted speed limit within the work zone will be fined. More information on the program can be found here.
