Maintenance
Service & Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment)
Duties Description: As a Service & Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment) you would: 1) Diagnose and correct the cause of faulty vehicle and equipment operation. 2) Overhaul, adjust and repair gaseous fuel engines, clutches, transmissions, and differentials; ignition, wiring, lighting, fuel, cooling, braking, and complex hydraulic systems; steering, wheel, and suspension mechanisms; and body, cab, and frame components. 3)Conduct NYS inspections. 4) May be assigned to overhaul and rebuild starters, generators, compressors, pumps (fuel, water, air, and hydraulic), spreaders, small engines, mowers, and a variety of other equipment, including but not limited to, track vehicles, loaders (front-end and belt), cranes, shovels, lifts, hydraulic excavators, etc. 5) May diagnose and repair electronic engine control systems, anti-lock brake systems, and air conditioning. 6) May also be required to do cutting and welding. 7) In small shops you may supervise Service and Repair Assistants (motor Equipment), Facility Operations Assistants 1, and others. 8) May be required to make road calls, test drive equipment, complete reports, use parts catalogs, and perform other related duties. At the time of appointment, you are required to furnish a basic tool set.
Competitive Pay and Excellent Benefits: The Thruway Authority offers a competitive salary and benefits package in all parts of the state. The positions below belong to the Teamster's Negotiating Unit and provide employees numerous opportunities to work overtime at a rate of time and a half, particularly during the winter maintenance season. The hourly rates for SRMs range from $19.23 to $26.96 depending on geographic location and commensurate with experience. Preferred Qualifications: experience maintaining and repairing medium or heavy duty diesel powered trucks equipped with air brakes and hydraulic equipment, such as dump body hydraulic circuits, garbage truck roll offs, garbage compactors, wood chippers, front plows or hydraulically operated spreader systems.
Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must be at least 18 years of age and meet the minimum qualifications for appointment as described below:
- Either:
- Four years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic responsible for the diagnosis of faulty vehicle and/or equipment operation and the performance of mechanical repairs covering several aspects of automotive and/or equipment operation and the performance of mechanical repairs covering several aspects of automotive and/or diesel systems; OR
- An associate’s degree in automotive or diesel repair technology. Substitution: Education as detailed below may be substituted for a maximum of two years of experience.
- Either:
- Graduation from a technical or vocational program, such as B.O.C.E.S, in automotive or diesel technology or automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for one year of experience; OR
- Graduation from a one-year post high school certificate program in automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for up to two years of experience. Experience limited to airplane (aviation) mechanic (except for ground equipment); gas station attendant; the repair of motorcycles, motor boats, or small engines; installation or repair of transmissions, mufflers, brakes, or tires; new car preparation; auto body repair work; or management activities as the owner or supervisor of a repair shop or service station is NOT QUALIFYING; OR Transfer via section 70.1: One year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service as a Service and Repair Mechanic Motor Equipment (formerly Motor Equipment Mechanic). A CDL B license will be required. Candidates applying without a CDL B license are required to obtain a Commercial Driver License permit within 30 days of appointment and a CDL B by the end of probation or will be terminated.
Thruway Maintenance Worker (TMW) and Thruway Maintenance Worker Trainee
Duties Description: TMW and TMW Trainees, under the supervision of Thruway Maintenance Supervisors 1 or 2 or journey-level trades workers, work alone or as a member of a team performing maintenance, repair, improvement and reconstruction of pavements, shoulders, medians, right-of-way, facilities, ramps, interchanges, bridges, culverts, water control and other structures, appurtenances and retaining walls. TMWs perform snow and ice control activities; operate and perform maintenance and minor repairs on a variety of self-propelled pneumatic and other equipment; and may serve as a team leader and provide guidance and instruction to others.
Duties require medium to heavy physical effort, shift work, call outs, scheduled and unscheduled overtime, exposure to adverse weather conditions, standing for prolonged periods of time, working in non-permit required confined spaces and at heights, and use of personal safety equipment, including respirators.
Competitive Pay and Excellent Benefits: The Thruway Authority offers a competitive salary and benefits package in all parts of the state. The positions below belong to the Teamster's Negotiating Unit and provide employees numerous opportunities to work overtime at a rate of time and a half, particularly during the winter maintenance season. The hourly rates for TMWs range from $25.26 to $34.47 depending on geographical area and experience level upon appointment. Thruway Maintenance Workers (TMWs) are responsible for maintaining the length of the Thruway, spanning from New York City to Buffalo and the Pennsylvania border. These workers perform duties required to maintain, improve, repair, and reconstruct the infrastructure of the 570-mile superhighway.
TMW and TMW Trainee positions are filled at various locations in the four Divisions – New York, Albany, Syracuse and Buffalo. Please read the qualifications below for EACH level.
Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must be at least 18 years of age and meet the minimum qualifications for appointment to the TMW Trainee 1, 2, or 3 or Journey-Level TMW as described below:
- TMW Trainee 1 Level – 36-Month Traineeship:
Possession of a valid New York State Commercial Driver License Class B Permit with tank endorsement and no air brake restriction. - TMW Trainee 2 Level – 24 Month Traineeship:
- One year as a TMW Trainee 1; OR
- Possession of a Commercial Driver License Class B with tank endorsement and no air brake restriction and six months of experience operating construction equipment and vehicles and twelve months of experience in carpentry, masonry, welding, ironwork, or other trade related to bridge construction or repair; OR
- A valid Commercial Driver License Class B with tank endorsement and no air brake restriction and eighteen months of experience operating construction equipment and vehicles.
- TMW Trainee 3 Level – 12 Month Traineeship:
- One year as a TMW Trainee 2; OR
- Possession of a Commercial Driver License Class B with tank endorsement and no air brake restriction; AND
Twelve months of experience in operating construction equipment and vehicles; AND - Eighteen months of experience in carpentry, masonry, welding, ironwork, or other trade related to bridge construction or repair.
- Journey-Level TMW:
- Satisfactory completion of a three year TMW Traineeship; OR
- Possession of a New York State Commercial Driver License Class B with tank endorsement and no air brake restriction; AND
One year of experience operating construction equipment and vehicles;
AND EITHER
- Two years of experience in carpentry, masonry, ironwork, welding, or other trade related to bridge construction or repair; OR
- Training received through completion of a two year technical school course in carpentry, masonry, welding, ironwork, or other trade related to bridge construction or repair; OR
- Completion of a high school technical course in carpentry, masonry, welding, ironwork, or other trade related to bridge construction or repair and 12 months of experience in bridge construction or repair.

Engineering Transportation Student Assistants
The New York State Thruway Authority’s Department of Engineering is offering challenging summer student assistant opportunities for student architects, engineers, landscape architects, and surveyors at its Headquarters building in Albany, New York. These paid positions will provide valuable educational and career exploration opportunities within the transportation engineering and surveying fields related to highway design, structural design, survey, and other engineering support areas. Each Student Assistant will be mentored by experienced Professional Engineers, Architects, and Surveyors. Seasonal Student Assistant positions are available to start between late May/early June and are anticipated to end in mid to late August of each year. Each position is temporary (up to 37.5 hours per week), Monday through Friday. Daily schedule is dependent on the position.
Qualifications:

Transportation Construction Inspectors (seasonal positions)
Job Duties:
Seasonal Transportation Construction Inspectors (TCIs) are hired during the construction season. Working under the guidance of a Project Engineer, TCIs perform inspection or inspection-related tasks on Thruway construction projects, ensuring conformance with the contract plans and specifications such as:
Field Office Activities: Calculates and verifies lengths, areas, and volumes to support authorization of payments to the contractor and performs other technical and engineering-related functions as required.
Earthwork Inspection: Inspects contractor’s operations in building earth or rock embankments which serve as foundations for pavement; conducts gradation, compaction, and moisture content testing to ensure materials are in compliance with the specifications and are properly placed and compacted; checks thickness of the layer of material placed and type and suitability of compaction equipment.
Concrete Inspection: Inspects contractor’s operations in placement of concrete for pavements, bridge piers, abutments and footings; conducts air content tests, slump tests, and obtains cylinders for subsequent compressive strength tests; inspects contractor’s method of handling and placing concrete to minimize segregation; ensures proper finishing and curing of the concrete; inspects paving train to ensure a smooth pavement on concrete paving operations.
Structural Inspection: Inspects contractor’s erection of steel to ensure correct placement; inspects field welds, bolted connections and painting of steel; inspects placement of reinforcing steel prior to placement of structural concrete.
Drainage Inspection: Inspects contractor’s operations in the installation of culverts, drainage ditches, etc.; ensures excavation of trenches is done in a safe manner and to proper alignment and grade; ensure correct material is placed and properly shaped to “bed” the pipe, and that backfill over pipe is of correct material and properly compacted.
Asphalt Pavement Inspection: Inspects contractor’s placement of asphalt pavement; ensures temperature for placement is within specified limits, lift thickness is in conformance with specifications and asphalt is properly compacted.
Competitive Pay:
The Thruway Authority offers a competitive salary in all parts of the state. The hourly rates for TCIs range from $23 to $25 commensurate with experience.
Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates must be at least 18 years of age and meet the minimum qualifications for appointment as described below:
Transportation Construction Inspector 1: One construction season (minimum of three months) of work experience in highway, bridge, or other civil engineering related construction inspection; or completion of at least a minimum of 27 semester credit hours of college course work as part of an associate degree program in engineering, engineering technology, construction technology, engineering science, surveying technology, drafting/CAD, or heavy equipment operations; or completion of at least 27 semester credit hours of college course work as part of a bachelor’s degree program in engineering, engineering technology, environmental sciences or environmental technology, construction management, construction supervision, engineering management, construction engineering or construction engineering technology, transportation planning, mathematics, physical science, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, landscape architecture, surveying, physics, geology, or forestry.
Transportation Construction Inspector 2: Two construction seasons (minimum of six months total) of work experience in highway, bridge, or other civil engineering related construction inspection; or completion of an associate degree program in engineering, engineering technology, construction technology, engineering science, surveying technology, drafting/CAD, or heavy equipment operations; or completion of at least 54 semester credit hours of college course work as part of a bachelor’s degree program in engineering, engineering technology, environmental sciences or environmental technology, construction management, construction supervision, engineering management, construction engineering or construction engineering technology, transportation planning, mathematics, physical science, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, landscape architecture, surveying, physics, geology, or forestry; or completion of one construction season of work experience, as described in TCI 1 above, plus a minimum of 27 semester credit hours of college course work as part of an associate or bachelor’s degree program as cited above.
Transportation Construction Inspector 3: Completion of six months as a Transportation Construction Inspector 2; or completion of three months as a Transportation Construction Inspector 2 and completion of at least 81 semester credit hours of college course work as part of a bachelor's degree program in engineering, engineering technology, environmental sciences or environmental technology, construction management, construction supervision, engineering management, construction engineering or construction engineering technology, transportation planning, mathematics, physical science, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, landscape architecture, surveying, physics, geology, or forestry.
A valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State is also required.
